Dawn on day 11 at DeanichDay 11 - Usual get up and put on a few extra layers, thermals still in place. Today was porridge with a treat, two peices of chocolate went in it, whilst is was nice it is stil not as good as the syrup, so that is tomorrows!

We left Deanich just after 8am and made our way up to Alladale. When we arrived we disembarked the Land Rover and went to the conference room as usual to wait for Chris to come back with our instructions for the day, which we believed would be stalking. Poppy put his head round the door and let us know there was only one guest going stalking so chances are we would not be, which meant a chance to do something else on the estate.

a hole to fillThat something else was picking up rocks and dropping them in holes. We drove up the glen back past Deanich and on to where the horses were. Then we walked on a ways further and managed to find a a few holes that needed plugging.

It was sort of conservation based in getting the paths restored for walking, but the main reason was to make sure that the path was good for the horses.

The horses are used for carrying the stags after they have been shot. Which is in itself an act of sonservation - if the stags were not shot and if the hinds are not shot then many of them would starve over the winter. Even though feed is put out there is not enough for everyone.

Waterfall pictureHorsesWe did the stones for a while - having to walk over to the stream to get them and then back down the path. After which we stopped and had our lunch in the Land Rover. After lunch we took some photos of the waterfalls, then Carol and I walked back a bit to see the horses and give them some nuts.

That was pretty much it for the day then. We started to drive back and just before we arrived at Deanich Innes was coming the other way so we turned around and followed him back to where we had been working. He took a look at what we had been doing and we will be going back again on Friday to finish it off. This time we will take some spades and other implements back to help us do the path.

We did then return to Deanich at about 15:00. We settled down for a nice relaxed afternoon playing cards and watching television.

We had a great dinner of broccoli, sausage, mash and onion gravy! Then some more DVD of FireFly and finally bedtime...
